Rocket French
I was looking for an online or PC
based "Learn French" programme. I came across Rocket French, and then
looked at what other people had to say about it. It was all good, so I got
myself a copy. Now I am passing on what I think about Rocket French to
you.
This is not an advert - it is what I really
think - but if you decide to buy it, it will earn this site a few dollars
and help me to maintain it!
Rocket French is an easy to follow "how to speak,
read and write French" programme.
It is full of loads of useful information, and includes 45 read and write lessons
that include over 700 activities and exercises and more than 3,000 sound files
(about 7 hours worth of audio), three games that will boost your
learning all with step-by-step instructions.
Not only that, you
now also get over 11 hours of interactive audio lessons as well (each
around 20 to 25 minutes), separate to but complimenting the original
Rocket French Course. I found these to be really helpful. Each audio
lesson deals with a short conversation (and there are many subjects
covered over the lessons). The conversation is broken down into individual
words, then a few words put together, then a full sentence and finally the
whole conversation. Each audio takes around 20-25 minutes - long enough
for most people's concentration levels. Everything is said in French and
then English. I found the audio really has helped me, and then the rest of
the Rocket French programme a really useful back-up for more serious study
- all of it really easy to follow and broken down in to "bite-sized"
pieces that make it easier to take in and remember.
Here's my thoughts - It is extremely simple and easy to use -
you can learn French at your own rate (which for me is .... when I have
time...) and know that you will be able to read, write and speak French
with confidence if you put in the practice (I keep telling myself that!). Each
read/write lesson has a good selection of phrases and vocabulary, all with audio
buttons, so you can click and listen to how it is pronounced (so
important, if you have come from UK with a regional accent). Then click
again, until you master it. Each Interactive Audio lesson builds on the
next, so that soon you will feel confident, even before you finish the
course. If you forget something, simply re-listen to a previous lesson.
From start to finish, each lesson is easily
accessible, so, any time of day that you want to have a practice, you can.
It combines audio with reading and writing French, so you get to learn all
three skills at the same time. The audio is clear - you get the English
followed by two repeats of the French. That way, you can listen and then
have a go yourself. If you don't get it first time, simply click the
button again to have another listen (as many times as you need). There are
many advantages to this course over a simple "listen to" CD course. You
get to see the words you are trying to say. This helps you recognise words
when you are out and about in France. You get to practice writing French
words, which in turn, helps you to remember those words - everything works
hand in hand.
There are exercises at the end of each lesson
- these help you to pinpoint areas that may need more
attention. And of course, that is easy - just go back over the lesson
until you have mastered the words and phrases, again, all in your own
time, when it suits you.
This course is not just holiday French
(although it is great if you are planning a holiday) - but it also covers grammar and vocabulary
for many situations that you may encounter including business, education,
employment, vacations, sport and many more.
Here's a few lessons you can expect from
the Read/Write section:
Remember there are 45 of them...plus a whole load of separate easy to
listen to audio lessons.
You start with "Naming Things" - this helps
you with the Le and the La side of things (very important to get the
gender right). Then you progress to...
Quantities and Time - very useful.... then we
get in to pronouns, verbs and all that complicated stuff - BUT this course
simplifies each area in to separate lessons. Then move on to verbs and
adverbs. Then useful lessons on subjects like: Food and Wine; Culture;
Travel; Money; Making complaints; that sort of thing.
Do only as much as you can cope with at any
one time. Master it and move on - or move backwards and forwards through
the lessons as it suits you. It is very flexible.
By the end of the course you should feel confident in being able to
communicate in French, whether it is for a holiday, for your studies, for your business or you have moved to France and want to integrate with
the locals.
Visit the
Rocket French website and try their free 6 day course. I did, it is
very simple but gives some useful tips and gives you an insight in to how
the Course works. You haven't got anything to loose and loads to gain. I
have been very impressed with what I have seen, read and learned, both
from the free 6 day course and the paid for (it doesn't cost very much)
course. Also, one other great
point is that not only is it about learning the language (spoken, read and
written) but there are many useful insights into the culture and
etiquette.
Now here's the advert! I am
only promoting it on this site, because I think it's worth it. It's
helped me a lot. It is much better than other CD courses I have tried
(that were also more expensive).
