ARGENTOMAGUS: A Living Museum of a Gallo-Roman Town, Argenton

Discover 1 million years of history through prehistoric times to the end of the Roman era. This museum is directly on top of the Gallo-Roman town of Argentomagus - an entirely modern museum using the latest museological techniques to take you through a fascinating journey of history. The displays lead you down a gently slope from prehistoric relics in the Creuse River Valley to the vestiges of the town of Argentomagus. Beneath the museum lies the vast archaeological crypt with its spectacular architectural details and the only domestic Gallo-Roman altar of its kind in Gaul, shown in its original location.

In the surrounding location, on a remarkably well preserved site is the 2nd century town. Walk along the streets, visit houses and temples and wonder at the theatre and monumental fountain. You can easily imagine how our forebears lived some 18 centuries ago. There are regular excavations bring to light new monuments each year.

The Museum cost 3 Euros to enter and the Ancient Town is free to walk round. The museum is open all year round, every day except Tuesday from 9.30am to 12 noon and 2pm to 6pm, with complete accessibility for the handicapped and specially signposted for the blind. Guided group tours are available on request as well as educational services. Museum shop.
