There is more to La Souterraine, La Creuse, than meets the eye. Easily overlooked on the journey to or from Limoges airport, La Souterraine has a lot to offer the sightseer with its well presented shops, cafes and restaurants, a beautifully restored library and other historic buildings.

La Porte St Jean

One of the impressive sites of the town, the 13th century Porte de St Jean (The Midsummer's Day Door) was used as a prison until 1860. It has three floors, from the third you have a remarkable view of the town.

It has been classified as an historic building since 1920.

L'Eglise

The 11th-12th century church was built by the monks of the Saint-Martial Abbey of Limoges. It is on the Route de Jacques de Compestella. There is a reference mark on the south-west corner of the church.

La Biblioteque  (Library)

Set on 3 floors, the Library at La Souterraine is well stocked, including a CD and DVD lending library.

On the top floor is a small but well lit exhibition space for artists. This is accessed either by the superb oak staircase or by a lift.

The staff are very friendly.

Eating-out in La Souterraine is easy, there are plenty of places to choose from and they all look inviting and offer very reasonable and varied menus.

The cafe/restaurant pictured above was next to the superbly restored library building. Menus start from 10€ which included 5 choice of starter, 5 choice main course and either cheese or a selection of 3 to 4 puddings. We had a carafe of wine, water, followed by coffee and it was a little over 15€ each.
