Black madonnas in France - an introduction by Cassandra Eason

Moulin is a small city in the Allier that is full of charm. In L'Église du Sacré-Cœur de Moulins you will find la Vierge en bois du XV siécle - A Black Madonna of the 15th century.

BLACK MADONNAS OF MOULINS

Black Madonnas are found in shrines, churches and cathedrals all over Europe and France has the highest concentration of them - over 300. The Black Madonna (and child) is the most scared of icons of the Catholic Church and has been the focus of pilgrimages for literally millions of people searching for inspiration and healing.

There are a few Black Madonnas in the Allier and a considerable number in the Puy du Dome (not covered by this site, but if I get to visit any I shall included them on these pages) and one or two in the Creuse.

MOULINS: L'Église du Sacré-Cœur de Moulins

In L'Église du Sacré-Cœur de Moulins in the centre of Moulins (the capital of the Bourbonnais), this Vierge Noir looks over a small chapel area dedicated to her.
