HERISSON, ALLIER, AUVERGNE
Hérisson is one of the most charming small towns I have visited so
far. It is situated just north of the D11 between Vallon-en-Sully and
Cosne d'Allier - OR halfway between La Châtre and Moulins.
The River Aumance borders this small town,
meandering in sweeping curves around the south side - here there are
plenty of places to sit and enjoy the ambience, have a picnic or take a
stroll. The Aumance is a tributary of the River Cher, which in turn is a
tributary of the wonderful River Loire.
The imposing castle ruins, and many
buildings in the town, date back to the 14th century. This property of the
Dukes of Bourbon was taken by Louis XI in the fifteenth century, and then
by the princes two centuries later, before being dismantled by Mazarin.
The castle is in the throws of restoration,
but is open to the public for free. There are some wonderful rooftop views
from the central ground of the castle.
The annual Brocante is held sometime in
August (around the 20th) the whole town gets shut off from traffic. Well
worth a visit.
