Inspiration My inspiration has always been from the landscape, usually the rural landscape. In my UK days I was obsessed with ancient sites and burial chambers (mostly of Ireland) and I usually painted scenes based on the insides of megalithic tombs such as Newgrange. Since moving to Central France my inspirations are still drawn from the landscape but more towards the land and sky - there are not that many burial chambers around here! I think if there were, the land and sky would come second. I adore how marks in or on the landscape created by man interact and often enhance what nature has laid out before us. (This was a subject that was strongly emphasised in my thesis). These marks are often agricultural, the way lines are created in fields creating a definition of the natural contours. As part of this inspiration, the four seasons also play their role. I am particularly fond of the orange and red hues of late summer and early autumn in my landscapes and also the blues and greys of winter. A different source of inspiration is drawn from sky and water. I used to live by the sea for over 15 years. Where I lived was one of the most beautiful parts of the coastline (Charmouth to Portland in Dorset). It is only now that I realise how I should have made more use of my location. Now I am in the middle of France about as far away from the sea as I can get, I have a yearning to paint it. My latest paintings are leaning towards abstract and the sea seems to be a theme that is pulling at me. But, because it is not easy for me to go and sketch the coastline I have begun working from within and creating my own seascapes from many years of coastal memories. I have just begun to work on a series of paintings (which may well take a year or two) that will inevitably lead to the sea. This is the Loire River: Source to Sea project. The end result will be a journey of discovery for me, not only by learning about new places but also developing and evolving my painting and drawing techniques and style. I am building a separate website to cover this project and which will extend into more in-depth information about all the areas travelled through. Ultimately, this project will result in an in-depth art study of water, landscape, man's influence on the landscape and a journey of around 630 miles - or nearly 1000km. On this project I will be painting not only waterscapes, but also the many wine regions along the route and making studies of the many picturesque towns and villages - so at the end of my journey I hope to have created three interlinked series of sketches, drawings and paintings that will be exhibited throughout 2008 and 2009, with the intention of publishing a book of the journey incorporating photographs, sketches and paintings along with information for the traveller (or virtual traveller). |
